CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR 2008

Sunday, March 9th
Blasco Memorial Library hosts “Reading the Landscape Through Technology” a Geo-caching Workshop with Gene Polaski, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Free to the public.
Geocaching: For those of you new this type of outdoor adventure, Geocaching is a treasure hunt for the 21st century. Armed with a GPS receiver (Global Positioning System), a set of coordinates tells you the location of a “cache.” A GPS unit is an electronic device that can determine your approximate location on the planet. Coordinates are normally given in Longitude and Latitude. A typical cache is most likely a strong box that can contain almost anything like small toys, CD’s, or trinkets hidden by other geocachers. All caches contain a log to record your accomplishment. Some even have a disposable camera, so you can take your picture and leave it so the owner of the cache can record it.

Saturday, April 12th
Tom Ridge Environmental Center hosts “Hawk Watch and Sky Dance” from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Erie Bluffs, located just west of Elk Creek off of Route 5. Also that morning, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am, you can participate in “Sky Dance”, a workshop with Anne DeSarro. The day’s events are free to the public.
Sky Dance: Take a hike with the naturalist and discover the mystery of birds. This time of year birds are returning to their summer breeding grounds. Spot some of our common species while we hike to the scenic bluff.

Saturday, May 17th
Asbury Woods hosts “Night Watchers” at the nature center. Participate in a drawing workshop with artist Lee Steadman then an Owl Watch with Steve Wasiesky. From 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. A $5 pre-registration fee is required; contact the Arts Council of Erie, 814-452-3427, to register.
Lee will conduct a drawing lesson on owls. Anatomy, structure plumage etc. will be explored. Bird skins will be available to work from and study. Come learn more about these elusive nighttime predators. Then venture outside with Steve who will lead a night hike along the trails at Asbury Woods. He will use his voice in attempt to “call in” a real owl for all to see.
